The Ultimate
Umrah Guide

Four sacred pillars. One profound journey. Understand every ritual, every ruling, and every dua — so you can stand before the Kaaba with full confidence and an open heart.

4 Pillars of Umrah
3–6 Hours to complete
Any Time of year
Sins forgiven
Begin the journey
"From one Umrah to the next is an expiation for whatever sins come in between them, and a Hajj that is accepted will have no less a reward than Paradise."
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim · Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA)

Before You Begin

Umrah is a highly recommended Sunnah that wipes away past sins and renews the soul. Unlike Hajj, it can be performed at almost any time of the year, and typically takes three to six hours to complete once you enter the Haram. But its reward lasts a lifetime — and perhaps beyond.

Ghusl — Ritual Bath

Perform a full-body Ghusl with the intention of purification before Ihram. Use unscented soap. This is highly recommended (Sunnah Mu'akkadah) before entering the state of Ihram.

  • Wash the entire body thoroughly
  • Use only unscented soap and shampoo
  • Trim nails and remove unwanted hair beforehand
  • Apply no perfume after Ghusl if going into Ihram

Tawbah — Sincere Repentance

Come to Umrah with a clean slate. Seek forgiveness from Allah for past sins, and from any people you have wronged. Pay back any debts. The journey is far more powerful when you begin it unburdened.

  • Make sincere Tawbah for known sins
  • Ask forgiveness from those you have wronged
  • Clear outstanding debts if possible
  • Make a genuine intention not to return to past sins

Memorise the Talbiyah

The Talbiyah is the pilgrim's signature call to Allah. You will recite it from the moment you enter Ihram until you begin Tawaf. Memorise it so you can feel its meaning, not just its words.

Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayk laa shareeka laka Labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk. Laa shareeka lak.

What to Pack

Pack light but thoughtfully. Every item should serve a specific role in the conditions of the Haram.

  • 2 sets of Ihram (men) or modest loose clothing (women)
  • Unscented soap, deodorant, and shampoo
  • Lightweight sandals broken in before travel
  • Small drawstring bag for shoes
  • Dua booklet or memorised Duas on phone
  • Portable power bank and emergency card

Every Step, Explained

Umrah has four obligatory pillars (Arkan). Omitting any one of them invalidates the Umrah and cannot be compensated for by a penalty. Do them in order, do them well.

Pillar One
The Entry Gate

Ihram & Niyyah

الإحرام والنية

Ihram is not merely a garment — it is a state of being. The moment you declare your Niyyah and recite the Talbiyah, you cross from the ordinary world into the sacred. You cannot undo this state by removing the cloth; the state is in the intention and the rules that bind you from this moment forward.

The Miqat is the threshold you must not cross without being in Ihram. If you are flying, the pilot will announce when the plane crosses the Miqat boundary. If you are already in Makkah or inside the Miqat, travel to the nearest Masjid al-Tan'eem (Masjid Aisha) to put on Ihram from there.

👨 For Men
Two unstitched white sheets — one wrapped around the waist (Izar), one draped over the left shoulder exposing the right (Rida). No underwear, no stitched clothing, no covered footwear above the ankle. No cap or hat.
👩 For Women
Any modest, loose-fitting clothing covering the entire body. Only the face and hands remain uncovered. No niqab or gloves while in Ihram. Any colour is permitted — white is not required.

Make the intention: "Labbayk Allahumma Umratan" — O Allah, here I am to perform Umrah. Begin the Talbiyah immediately and recite it continuously until you see the Kaaba.

Prohibited in Ihram

✂️
Cutting hair or nails
🌹
Wearing perfume
🤝
Intimate relations
🦌
Hunting animals
👔
Stitched garments (men)
🌿
Cutting plants
Ruling on violations

Minor violations (using scented soap accidentally, briefly covering the head) require a Fidyah — slaughtering an animal or fasting or feeding six poor people. Intentional intimacy invalidates the Umrah. When in doubt, ask your Mubarakhajj guide immediately.

Pillar Two
The Circumambulation

Tawaf al-Umrah

طواف العمرة

Tawaf means circling. You will walk counterclockwise around the Kaaba seven complete rounds, beginning and ending at the Black Stone. This act mirrors the angels circling the Bayt al-Ma'mur in the heavens above — and millions of Muslims have performed this same walk since the time of Ibrahim (AS).

Stop reciting the Talbiyah the moment you see the Kaaba. From now until the end of Tawaf, engage in personal Dua, Dhikr, and Quran recitation — there is no fixed Dua for each round. Speak to Allah in any language, in whatever words come from your heart.

Gold = Idtiba & Raml (men only)
  • Idtiba: Men expose the right shoulder by placing the Ihram over the left only. Done for all 7 rounds during Tawaf.
  • Raml: Men walk briskly with short, quick steps in rounds 1, 2, and 3 only. Return to normal pace for rounds 4–7. This is Sunnah, not obligatory.
  • Each round begins and ends at the Black Stone (or the green marker on the wall). Facing it, say "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" and kiss or point to it.
  • Stay in Wudu (ritual purity) for the entire Tawaf. If it breaks, go and renew it, then restart that round.
  • After 7 rounds, go to Maqam Ibrahim and pray 2 Rak'ahs — reciting Al-Kafirun in the first and Al-Ikhlas in the second.
  • Then drink generously from the blessed Zamzam water. It has been flowing for over 4,000 years.
If you lose count

If you are unsure whether you completed 5 or 6 rounds, assume the lower number (5) and continue. It is better to do an extra round than to miss one. Track with a counter app or quietly use your fingers.

Pillar Three
The Walk of Hajar

Sa'i Between Safa & Marwah

السعي بين الصفا والمروة

This walk is one of the most emotionally resonant rituals in Islam. Sa'i re-enacts the desperate search of Hajar (AS) — wife of Ibrahim — who ran back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah seeking water for her infant son, Ismail (AS). At the moment of her greatest need, the Zamzam spring burst from the earth. We walk this path to remember: trust in Allah is never misplaced.

You will make 7 passes: starting at Safa, ending at Marwah. Each one-way trip counts as one pass. Safa to Marwah = 1. Marwah back to Safa = 2. And so on until you reach Marwah on the 7th pass.

Safa

Marwah

Marwah 7th = End
  • At Safa, face the Kaaba, raise your hands, and make Dua. Recite: "Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha'a'irillah..." on the first round only.
  • Between the two green pillar markings, men should jog gently (Harwala). Women walk at their normal pace throughout.
  • You may perform Sa'i in a wheelchair or on the upper floors if you are unable to walk — it is fully valid.
  • Sa'i does not require Wudu, though it is recommended to be in a state of purity. If your Wudu breaks during Sa'i, you may continue.
  • You do not need to make Dua at each hill — engage in any Dhikr, Quran, or personal supplication throughout.
The lesson of Hajar (AS)

She did not sit and wait for a miracle. She ran — back and forth, seven times — with full trust that Allah would provide. As you walk this path, reflect: in what area of your own life do you need to act and then trust Allah with the outcome?

Halq or Qasr — Releasing the Ihram

الحلق أو التقصير

After completing your Sa'i at Marwah, you have one final act before your Umrah is complete: cutting your hair. This act symbolises the shedding of the old self — it is an outward sign of an inward transformation. It is not cosmetic. It is a declaration that you have answered Allah's call and returned changed.

The cutting must be done inside the boundaries of Makkah (the Haram). Do not cut your hair on the bus or at the airport. Barbers are available near the Masjid al-Haram, and for women, this can be done in private accommodation.

👨 Halq — Men (Recommended)
Shave the entire head completely. This is the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and carries greater reward. The barbers near the Haram will do this quickly and safely.
👨 Qasr — Men (Permissible)
Trim the hair evenly all around to an equal length — shortening it by at least one finger's width across the whole head. Trimming only one section is not sufficient.
👩 Qasr — Women (Always)
Gather all hair together and trim the length of a fingertip (roughly 2.5cm) from the end. Women never shave; Halq is prohibited for them.
✅ After Halq/Qasr
The Ihram state is lifted completely. You may return to normal clothing, use perfume, and resume all ordinary activities. Say Alhamdulillah — your Umrah is accepted, insha'Allah.
Alhamdulillah — your Umrah is complete

If this is your first time, sit for a moment after your hair is cut. Feel the weight of what you have just done. Between one Umrah and the next, all minor sins are forgiven. You leave lighter than you arrived. Ask Allah to accept it, grant you another, and let you return again.

What to Expect, Hour by Hour

A rough timeline for a typical Umrah. Timings vary based on crowd levels, your hotel's distance from the Haram, and your pace.

T – 2 hours

Ghusl, Ihram & Intention

Perform Ghusl at your accommodation, put on Ihram garments, make your Niyyah, and begin reciting the Talbiyah. If flying, do this before boarding or at the Miqat airport boundary.

Arrival at Haram

Entering the Masjid al-Haram

Enter with your right foot, reciting: "Bismillahi, Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad, Allahumma aftah li abwaba rahmatik." Stop reciting Talbiyah the moment you see the Kaaba.

45 min – 1.5 hours

Tawaf — 7 Rounds

Depending on crowd density, each round takes 10–20 minutes. Stay calm, maintain Wudu, and focus on Dua rather than rushing. The closer you are to the Kaaba the more intense the crowd; the outer rings are calmer.

After Tawaf · 15 min

Maqam Ibrahim Prayer & Zamzam

Pray 2 Rak'ahs behind or facing Maqam Ibrahim (if the crowd is too large, anywhere in the Masjid is valid). Then drink Zamzam. Take your time here — there is no rush.

45 min – 1 hour

Sa'i — 7 Passes

The Mas'a (the walkway between Safa and Marwah) is air-conditioned and less crowded than the Tawaf area. Each pass is approximately 450 metres — roughly 3.15km total. Walk steadily, make Dua, and remember Hajar (AS).

Final Step · 5 min

Halq or Qasr — Hair Cutting

Proceed to one of the nearby barbers (for men) or return to accommodation (for women). Once done, remove your Ihram and change into your normal clothes. Your Umrah is complete.

After Completion

Nafl Prayers & Ziyarah

Spend additional time in the Haram in voluntary prayer, Quran recitation, Dua, and sitting in contemplation. Visit Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah. These are not part of Umrah but are among the greatest blessings available.

Essential Duas for Umrah

Memorise these before you arrive. When you are standing before the Kaaba for the first time, the last thing you want to be doing is reading from a phone screen.

Niyyah · At Miqat
لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً
Labbayk Allahumma Umratan
The Niyyah for Umrah, declared at the Miqat. This single sentence initiates the state of Ihram and is one of the four pillars — without it, Umrah is invalid.
Entering the Haram
اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik
"O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy." Recited upon entering any mosque, especially the Masjid al-Haram. Enter with the right foot.
First Sight of the Kaaba
اللَّهُمَّ زِدْ هَذَا الْبَيْتَ تَشْرِيفًا وَتَعْظِيمًا
Allahumma zid hadhal-bayta tashreefan wa ta'zheeman...
"O Allah, increase this House in honour, greatness, nobility and awe." This is the moment scholars say your Dua is answered — do not waste it looking for your phone.
At the Black Stone
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَر
Bismillahi Allahu Akbar
Recited when passing or pointing toward the Black Stone at the start of each round of Tawaf. Kiss it if you can reach it. Point and say this if you cannot — the reward is the same.
At Safa & Marwah
إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ
Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha'a'irillah
"Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah." Recited at Safa before beginning the first pass only — then face the Kaaba and make Dua three times, with Takbeer between.
Drinking Zamzam
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا
Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an...
"O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and a cure from every disease." The Prophet ﷺ said Zamzam is for whatever purpose you drink it for — ask with intention.
